Flute students at UE take weekly private flute lessons (APM 106-406). They may also enroll in Flute Ensemble (MUS 117-417), a chamber flute group that meets for weekly coachings and puts on a public performance each semester.
Students are expected to arrive to their lessons on time and have all assigned materials prepared. Each student must bring a notebook to each lesson so that I may offer comments, record assignments, and maintain a written record of each lesson. Tape recording each lesson is strongly encouraged. Please arrive at each lesson with an open mind, positive attitude, and willingness to work and try new things.
A typical flute lesson consists of focus on tone and intonation studies, scale and technical exercises, etudes, orchestral excerpts, and solo pieces. Of course, each lesson is different and tailored to the needs of the student in a given week.
Flute Ensemble, or MUS 117-417, is a chamber ensemble made up of members of the current flute studio at the University of Evansville. The goal of this course is to give students valuable playing experience in chamber ensembles. Students will learn to collaborate with fellow musicians, enhance their ensemble playing ability and sensitivity to group playing, and improve their musicianship and collaborative skills. Over the past academic year, the Flute Ensemble has performed works by composers such as Friedrich Kuhlau, Antoine Berbiguier, Mike Mower, and Ian Clarke.
Students are encouraged to take part in the variety of large ensembles offered on campus. Groups include Wind Ensemble, University Band, Jazz Bands, Symphony Orchestra, String Ensemble, University Choir, Women's Chorus, Men's Chorus, Kantorei, and various chamber ensembles.
