Flute students at UVA take weekly private flute lessons. They may also enroll in Flute Ensemble, a chamber flute group that meets for weekly coachings and puts on a public performance each semester. More information about private lessons at UVA is available here.
Students are expected to arrive to their lessons on time and have all assigned materials prepared. Each student must bring a notebook to each lesson so that I may offer comments, record assignments, and maintain a written record of each lesson. Recording each lesson is strongly encouraged. Please arrive at each lesson with an open mind, positive attitude, and willingness to work and try new things.
A typical flute lesson consists of focus on tone and intonation studies, scale and technical exercises, etudes, orchestral excerpts, and solo pieces. Of course, each lesson is different and tailored to the needs of the student in a given week.
Flute Ensemble is a chamber ensemble made up of members of the current flute studio at the University of Virginia. The goal of this course is to give students valuable playing experience in chamber ensembles. Students will learn to collaborate with fellow musicians, enhance their ensemble playing ability and sensitivity to group playing, and improve their musicianship and collaborative skills.
The University of Virginia's McIntire Department of Music maintains a thriving performance community. Students are encouraged to take part in the variety of ensembles offered on campus. Groups include African Music and Dance Ensemble, Baroque Orchestra, Cavalier Marching Band, Charlottesville & University Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Singers, Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, Klezmer Ensemble, New Music Ensemble, Palladian Chamber Orchestra, University Singers, Wind Ensemble, and various small jazz and chamber ensembles.
